Finally, a new pre-print is available from our lab! This story, led by Alienor<\/strong>, investigates the\u00a0in vivo\u00a0<\/em>roles of DNA-binding proteins in\u00a0<\/strong>M. acetivorans<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em>Alienor found that archaeal histone<\/strong>, HmaA, and both copies of a methanogen-specific DNA-binding protein, MC1<\/strong>, are important for modulating exit from stasis or recovery from certain stresses. A new pre-prin<\/strong><\/a>t is available from our lab! This story, led by recent graduate Blake<\/strong> and joined by Katie<\/strong> and Dinesh<\/strong>, tests the modularity of pathways<\/strong> that are known to facilitate acetoclastic methanogenesis\u00a0<\/strong>and finds that metabolic complexes that have been thought to be interchangeable require additional changes in energetic modules as well.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This story, led by graduate student Katie Shalvarjian<\/strong> in collaboration with Gray Chadwick, Paloma P\u00e9rez, Philip Woods, and Victoria Orphan<\/strong>, investigates Pyrrolysine-based natural genetic code expansion in M. acetivorans<\/em> and finds that M. acetivorans<\/em> maintains an ambiguous genetic code<\/strong>. Nayak Lab graduate student Blake<\/strong> has\u00a0a new review out in Trends in Biochemical Sciences<\/em><\/a><\/strong>! In this review, Blake summarizes our current understanding of electron transport chains of methane-metabolizing archaea. The review highlights modularity in these electron transport chains, as well as the evolutionary innovations that have allowed certain groups of archaea to develop specialized metabolisms. Lab members Gray, Maddie, and Katie<\/strong> have a new pre-print out on BioRxiV<\/strong><\/a>! In this story, Gray, Maddie, and Katie investigate the role of methanogenesis marker metalloprotein 16 in Coenzyme M (CoM) biosynthesis and find that MMP16 is a bona fide<\/em> CoM synthase<\/strong> (ComF). Their work also reveals that while MMP16 is the main ComF in\u00a0Methanosarcina acetivorans,\u00a0<\/em>backup pathways for CoM biosynthesis exist, and are able to compensate in the absence of MMP16. Blake<\/strong> gives a talk at the Molecular Basis of Microbial One-Carbon Metabolism (C1)<\/strong><\/a> GRS. He wins best talk<\/strong> and goes on to give his talk to the main conference as well. He is also elected co-chair<\/strong> for the next C1 GRS in 2026. Congratulations Blake!!!

Dr. Fernando Medina Ferrer joins the lab as a postdoctoral fellow. <\/b>Prior to joining the lab, Fernando was a graduate student in the <\/span>Bailey lab<\/span><\/a> at U.
